GRAY: Janet Carter "Jan" Bridges, 39, of Cedarline Drive, died Saturday, April 24, 2010, in a local hospital, after
battling long-term complications of diabetes. The family will gather and receive friends from 3:00 - 6:00pm, Sunday at Bridges
Funeral Home in Gray. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Monday, April 26, 2010, at Calvary Baptist Church on Upper
River Road in Gray, with Rev. Danny Mundy, Dr. Roger Hinson and Dr. Donnie Melton officiating the services. Ms. Bridges will
be buried next to her maternal grandmother, Mary Gunn Carter, at Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Gray.
Ms. Bridges, the daughter of Jerry Conner Bridges, Sr. and Martha Helen Carter Bridges, was born on January 26, 1971,
in Athens, Georgia, and had lived most of her life in Gray. She was a 1989 graduate of Stratford Academy in Macon and a 1993
graduate of Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion. With a God-given
talent in both art and music, "Miss Jan", as she was affectionately known, worked during her high school and college
years with the children and youth of First Baptist Church of Gray. After leaving college, she worked as a volunteer for Habitat
For Humanity in Portland, Oregon, from 1993 - 1995. After her return home, "Miss Jan" worked for the next ten years
in youth and children's ministries at Vineville United Methodist Church in Macon. While working in various Methodist churches,
she was active in Camp Dooly Emmaus activities, as well as serving as children's and youth arts, crafts and Bible study leader
at Camp Adrian in the Dublin District. Currently, Miss Jan was teaching art at Calvary Baptist Academy in Gray, as well as
serving as Treasurer for the family business: Bridges Funeral Home. Jan was also a member of the Junior League of Macon, having
served as Chair of MarketPlace Expo and was a long time fan of Coach Pat Summitt and the Lady Volunteer Basketball teams of
the University of Tennessee
Jan is survived by her parents: Jerry and Helen Bridges, Sr., of Gray; brother and sister-in-law: Jerry and Michelle Bridges,
Jr., of Gray; nieces and spouse: Elisabeth Caroline and Matt VanPatton of Twiggs County and Kathryn Elizabeth Stanley of Gray;
great-nephew: Jonathan Gage VanPatton of Twiggs County; aunts and uncles: Annette Bridges of Apopka, Florida, Joann and Rev.
Neil Bridges of Lake Sinclair, James and Sandy Yeomans of Milan, Betty Carter of Rome and Gerri Carter of Dalton; a special
college friend and her family: Kathy and James Knowles and their children: Pierce and Emma; and by a host of cousins. Jan
is also survived by her much loved cats, from whom she derived much joy: Three-and-a-half, Butterbean and Cracklin.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Calvary Baptist Academy, 4364 Upper River
Road, Gray, Georgia 31032.
